Winemaking
Grapes
sourced from estate vineyards and small-scale growers in Rioja Alta.
The wine remained for 12 months in large wooden vats dating back to the
early 20th century, where it completed fermentation and settled before
racking. It matured for 30 to 36 months in used 225-liter American oak
barrels. Bottled in mid-1959. A minimum of 36 months of bottle aging
followed in the winery’s cellars prior to its commercial release.
Tasting Notes
Appearance:
Golden yellow color; it surprises with an absolute lack of evolution
for a wine of its age. Limpid, brilliant, and luminous, with coppery
reflections. Low sense of density, with barely any visible tears.
Nose:
An impressive nose—extraordinarily powerful and direct. It opens with
an intense medicinal memory of a traditional apothecary: lavender, rock
tea, and star anise, reaching a complex climax that is difficult to
describe. Just as it reaches this peak, it vanishes within seconds to
reveal a diaphanous core of tremendous maturity. There are massive
amounts of honeyed notes, quince paste, candied orange, and orange
blossom, alongside a back-and-forth of sweet spices and pastry-like
nuances. Shy hints of fine wood, cedar, and damp earth linger in the
background without stealing the spotlight. As potent as it is subtle and
profound.
Palate: Pure cream on the palate; unctuous, mature, and filled with sweet-toned fruit. It possesses a minimal abocado
(off-dry) touch that does not even reach the usual perception of a
semi-sweet wine of this age. Integrated, round, ample, and enveloping,
it features an intense acidity that neutralizes any excess. It clings to
the palate. Bottled pleasure.
Commentary
The
1955 Diamante Reserva is a staggering example of the longevity of Rioja
whites. It defies the typical oxidative trajectory, maintaining a
crystalline purity and a vibrant structural core after more than six
decades. Its transition from a powerful, herbal "apothecary" nose to a
rich, honeyed palate is a masterclass in complexity. A legendary bottle
that represents the pinnacle of the traditional abocado style of Franco-Españolas.
