Appellation / Zone: D.O.Ca. Rioja
Varietals: 65% Tempranillo, 35% Garnacha, Mazuelo, and Graciano.

Winemaking:
A selection of grapes from various estate-owned plots in Rioja Alta and local producers. The wine spent between 12 and 18 months in large foundational-era wooden vats to complete fermentation and stabilize before racking. It was aged in neutral 225-liter American oak barrels and foudres of varying volumes for a minimum of 50 months. Periodic manual rackings were performed until the day of bottling. The wine was bottled and released from the winery’s cellars according to market demand.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Brownish-ruby color with medium-low depth; clear and clean, though with a significant amount of sediment at the base. It features coppery and garnet reflections with a somewhat muted brilliance. Extremely broad, fully brick-orange rim, covering the entire meniscus.

Nose: Initially shy and lacking vigor, showing faint reductive notes of leaf litter, smoke, and creamy nuances, alongside whispers of cured leather. It demands extensive aeration; three hours later, the wine sheds its initial fatigue to reveal a complex, mineral character (graphite). A curious expression of candied red fruit emerges beneath earthy tones, gaining peppery accents reminiscent of certain historic Marqués de Riscal vintages. Impeccable, clean, and elegant in the classic Paternina style, it features a signature abocado touch of molasses and vanilla that expands over time, finishing with perfumes of coffee beans, tobacco threads, and cigar humidor.

Palate: Highly cohesive, rounded, and plush. It is soft yet savory, possessing a strong concentration. Fresh and sharp, it is driven by a "scissor-like" acidity. The previously detected mineral-metallic nuance reappears alongside an endless array of peppers. Remarkably long, it saturates the palate, offering the masterful contrast between sweetness and acidity typical of the greatest wines.

Commentary:
The 1955 Paternina Reserva Especial is a monumental expression that aligns more closely with the legendary Conde de los Andes of the same vintage than with other standard releases of its era. It is a wine of immense character and structural integrity, showcasing the "magic" of the 1955 harvest in Rioja Alta. A masterclass in balance that remains vibrant and authoritative decades after its birth.
