Marqués de Murrieta 1960 Reserva

Wine: Marqués de Murrieta 1960 Reserva
Winery: Marqués de Murrieta (Logroño, La Rioja)
Appellation / Zone: D.O.Ca. Rioja
Varietals: 60% Tempranillo, 30% Garnacha, 10% Mazuelo and others
ABV: 13% vol.
Winemaking:
Manual harvest and second grape selection on a sorting table upon arrival at the winery. Destemmed and pressed with maximum speed. The wine spent between 12 and 18 months in large oak vats from the founding era and, a small portion, in glazed concrete tanks to complete malolactic fermentation and stabilization. It matured in used 225-liter American oak barrels for between 200 and 210 months—nearly 18 years. Subjected to various periodic rackings during this time. The average age of the barrels was 30 years, reaching 45 years in some cases. Membrane-filtered before being bottled directly from the barrel upon demand. Marketed in the late 1970s.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Maintains an intense garnet color with medium-high depth; dark and opaque. Unbelievable for a 1960 vintage. Matte and dense with no sediment at the base. Narrow orange rim, sharply contrasted against the meniscus. Marked sense of thickness with persistent tearing.

Nose: Confusingly reminiscent of the 1954 Reserve; perhaps slightly more closed initially, but maintaining the same Murrieta hallmarks: expression, clarity, order, and finesse. It evolves from impeccable initial sobriety to incredible heights, unfolding with the utmost subtlety. First sensations of candied red fruit and cherries, integrated into a vaporous envelope of cedar and fine woods. As it breathes, it reveals high-quality layers of Virginia tobacco, fungi, smoke, forest floor, ground spices, and cloves. Outstanding level.

Palate: Clean, fresh, and silky, yet concentrated and complex. It shines at a very high level with a structural acidity that integrates the whole. Compact and elegant, endowed with "spongy" tannins. Calling it "classic" does not do it justice. It possesses that longed-for Murrieta style found in every legendary bottle.

Commentary:
To limit Murrieta's fame solely to the mythical Castillo de Ygay is an injustice to these grand Reserves, which have little to envy of their "older brothers." This is an absolute masterpiece of Rioja winemaking.
