Vega Sicilia Único 1965 Magnum

Wine: Vega Sicilia Único 1965 Magnum
Winery: Bodegas Vega Sicilia (Valbuena de Duero, Valladolid)
Appellation / Zone: D.O. Ribera del Duero
Varietals: 75% Tinto Fino, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot and Albillo
ABV: 13.5% vol.
Winemaking:
Grapes sourced exclusively from estate vineyards. After completing alcoholic fermentation, the wine is racked into large wooden vats where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and stabilizes for a minimum of 5 years. It is then transferred to 225-liter oak barrels to continue the maturation process for another 10 years. Subjected to various barrel-to-barrel rackings. Limited production of 91,000 Bordeaux bottles and 2,000 magnums.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Garnet-ruby color with medium-high depth; dark and opaque. Clean and brilliant, with sediment flakes at the base of the bottle—slightly more than usual. Reddish and amber reflections. Tile-colored (atejado) rim, sharply defined against the meniscus. Certain sense of thickness.

Nose: Extremely fine and compact, immovable, with no need for aeration to express itself with greater intensity. It delivers an elegant Único profile from the start, comparable to the 1962 magnum, though devoid of that "port-like" or liqueur-ish hint, which clearly sets them apart. Subtle and vaporous, revealing misty notes of exotic spices, fine woods, cigar cellar, and a complex background hint of violet candies and raisins. For over 3 hours, it remains anchored to these registers. As stated: as delicate as it is integral.

Palate: Presented in full plenitude, with a slight off-dry (creamy) sensation countered by acidity. Full of fresh fruit, hibiscus, and cinematic velvety tannins. Even more elegant on the palate, without any sharp edges. One of those infallible, "soft" Vega Sicilias that plays it safe. It lingers smoothly for hours. The double-bottle format suits this wine remarkably well!

Commentary:
An exceptional showing that proves the superior aging potential of the magnum format for these long-lived classics. It balances delicacy and integrity in a way few other wines can achieve after six decades.
