Tasting Notes

Appearance: Ruby-red of medium body; luminous with orange and amber highlights. It features a very clear, brick-colored rim.

Nose: Clean and open. Initially, a broad range of exotic wood aromas stands out, alongside wine-soaked staves, creamy undertones, and a splendid earthy background. There is an immense concentration of very ripe red fruit, cherry in liqueur, and sloes. Upon aeration, it unfolds to reveal refined notes of sweet chocolate, cocoa powder, and roasted nuances. Potent and seductive, it holds nothing back. As it continues to express itself, hints of "barnyard" (noble reduction), leather, fine cabinetry, and soft balsamic notes emerge.

Palate: Medium-bodied, lean, dry, and fresh. The entry is refined and elegant, with polished, slightly sweet tannins endowed with enormous potential. The ensemble is profoundly serious, complex, and of great classicism. A red "like they used to be"—pure class, with an acidity that at times borders on the excessive. It "oozes life" from the neck of the bottle, demanding a few more years of rest. Where can one find another bottle?

Oenological Perspective: The Soul of Bosconia
Few wines reflect the virtues and traditional methods of Rioja as genuinely as those from López de Heredia. The debate between Tondonia and Bosconia is deeply personal; while Tondonia incorporates 15-20% Garnacho (a variety absent in Bosconia), the latter often appears paler in hue but arguably more elegant and complex. Bosconia is less immediate, possessing a bottle-aging capacity that remains unparalleled in Spain. To taste these wines is to travel back in time and reclaim the pleasure of wines as they used to be.

The 1996 Vintage: The "Great Sleeper"
The 1996 Bosconia is the true "dark horse" of the winery and arguably the finest of the last two decades. Since Bosconia ceased to be a "5th Year" bottling (1982) and began labeling by vintage, this 1996 stands out as the superior harvest. One would have to retreat to the early 80s to find a Reserva with similar balance.

Remarkably, it achieved this status despite belonging to an officially "mediocre" vintage, overshadowed by the historic 1994 and 1995 harvests. This wine is thrilling for its longevity; it appears to still be in its first youth. While it is currently in a "sweet spot" for consumption, the empty bottle leaves one with the distinct impression that it could reach even greater heights with another decade in the cellar. A distinguished red, devoid of modern pretension, that defies any standard scale of measurement through its sheer class and quality. Phenomenal.
