Winemaking
The blend includes a minor, incidental percentage of white varieties (primarily Viura), sourced from the vines traditionally planted at the head of the rows for family consumption, which were harvested alongside the red grapes. The wine spent several months in large oak vats for fermentation and stabilization before being racked into barrels. It underwent an extensive élevage of 5 to 7 years in seasoned 225-liter American oak barriques. Traditional rackings were performed every three months during the first three years to avoid the need for filtration. Fined with fresh egg whites and hand-bottled directly from the barrel.
 
Tasting Notes
 
Appearance: Garnet-ruby hue of medium depth; remarkably youthful for its age with more intensity than expected. Luminous with garnet and copper glints; slightly turbid with a developing orange-tinted rim that shows a marked transition to the meniscus.
 
Nose: Evocative and profound, reminiscent of an autumnal landscape: forest floor, moss, truffle, and wet earth. It is highly expressive, gaining complexity as it breathes, unveiling high-quality reductive elements. Subtle oak traces offer notes of roasted chestnuts, walnut shells, and cocoa powder, alongside a suggestive hint of pipe tobacco by a hearth (charcoal, holm oak). Distinct mineral accents of graphite (pencil lead), pitch, and flint emerge in the background.
 
Palate: Impeccably polished and poised; a wine that does not shout—it whispers. It features spherical tannins and a delicate touch of sweetness that merges seamlessly with the soft, fresh acidity characteristic of Riscal’s historical style. The finish is exceptionally long and persistent, packed with spices and a lingering candied nuance.
