Viticulture
The Tempranillo is sourced from the estate's oldest vineyards in the
Rioja Alta sub-zone, primarily within the municipalities of Briñas,
Labastida, and Villalba. The remaining grapes originate from the
Melchorón I and II estates in Briones and Rodezno.
Winemaking
Winemaking
Alcoholic fermentation lasted 12 days, followed by devatting (descube)
five days later. Malolactic fermentation occurred naturally in
stainless steel tanks over 35 days. In March 1995, the wines were
transferred to new 225-liter French oak barrels for 4 years of aging,
being racked using the traditional "barrel-to-barrel" method every 6
months. Lightly filtered before bottling in April 1999.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Bright, very clean reddish-ruby with medium depth; showing orange and copper highlights. It features a broad, clear rim with a sharp distinction from the meniscus.
Nose:
Complex, open, and very serious on the nose. It is brimming with aromas
of cedar, high-quality wood, cigar humidor, blonde tobacco, and
fine—almost creamy—toasted notes. These give way to aromatic hints of
freshly ground coffee and aged leather, over a liqueur-like background
of macerated plums and ripe black cherries. Perfumed, elegant, and
direct; filled with spicy nuances that gain presence with aeration:
powdered bay leaf, clove, black pepper, aromatic herbs, and a fragrant
touch of withered flowers. A 904 of great integrity—powerful and full of
life—that never falters even after hours of being open.
Palate: Fresh and medium-bodied on the palate, with silky yet lively tannins. High-toned,
earthy, and somewhat citric, featuring a spicy edge and extraordinary
acidity. Exceptionally long, overflowing with strength and energy. It
possesses a less "classic" profile compared to preceding vintages.
