Winemaking
Initially aged for 12 months in large, foundational-era seasoned oak
vats to complete malolactic fermentation and stabilize before racking.
It underwent 48 months of aging in used 225-liter American oak barrels
with an average age of 10 years. A minimum of 2 years of bottle aging in
the winery’s underground cellars was completed prior to release.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Very weak in color. Clear, brownish-ruby with exceptionally low depth (capa); pristine and almost devoid of nuances. It shows amber highlights with a broad, tawny (tile-red) rim that merges seamlessly with the meniscus.
Nose:
A very soft wine on the nose, dominated by layers of vanilla and a
mature profile. It offers shy notes of candied red and black fruits.
While it fails to fully "take off," it remains pleasant and very much in
line with the 1980 vintage—somewhat distracted and lacking definition.
With more aeration, the expected notes of fine wood, leather, and earthy
tones finally emerge. A straightforward and reliable effort.
Palate:
Fresh and agile on the palate, driven by good acidity and a very
distinct earthy and spicy character. Creamy nuances arise alongside a
hint of sweetness and highly reduced fruit. Everything is in its place:
savory and well-crafted. It is an easy drinker, though it lacks
brilliance. This is an historical wine, marking the final vintage of the
"authentic" Berberana—the winery meticulously managed by Melquíades
Entrena before the arrival of the Rumasa group. What had been a Rioja
benchmark for decades begins here to show the major changes the winery
would undergo. It does not reach the legendary heights of the old Gran
Reservas and Cosechas Especiales that have reached us in peak condition
today. Nevertheless, the wines from the early 1980s maintained a solid
standard until the expropriation and subsequent sale of Berberana in
1985.
