Winemaking
The wine spent 12 months in vats to complete malolactic fermentation and settle before wood aging. It was matured for 48 months in semi-new 225-liter American oak barrels and bottled in 1988. Limited production of 60,000 bottles (75 cl). Depending on the vintage, the wine was aged for 36 to 48 months in the underground cellars of the historic winery in Ollauri before its release in February 1991.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Bright, luminous reddish-ruby; very clean and clear with medium depth (capa). It shows almost no sediment and appears younger than its actual age. Pomegranate and orange highlights are complemented by a broad copper rim that contrasts clearly with the meniscus.

Nose: Executed in a very classic style, reminiscent of the old Paternina profile. Aromas are of medium intensity, dominated by notes of seasoned oak, wine-soaked wood, vanilla, and an almost medicinal-balsamic undertone that brings forth strong hints of sage, verbena, and fenugreek. As it opens, it releases creamy toasted notes and ground spices (turmeric, smoked pepper) alongside a delicate patina of leather, very ripe red fruits, orange zest, and nuances of cigar boxes. It conveys the sensation of a well-settled, mature, and deeply traditional wine.

Palate: Surprisingly powerful and concentrated on the palate. Fresh and spirited (nervioso), featuring tannins that are supple yet still quite prominent. The hallmarks of the 1982 vintage are evident through its striking initial acidity and notable breadth. Spicy, lively, and fully intact; in character, it leans more towards a Conde de los Andes than the winery's typical Gran Reserva profile. The finish is exceptionally long and candied. An excellent wine.
