Winemaking
The wine remained for 6 months in wooden vats to complete malolactic fermentation. It matured for 8 years in old 225-liter American oak barrels crafted by the winery's own cooperage. The wine underwent two manual rackings per year and was fined with fresh egg whites. Bottled directly from the barrel without filtration, featuring a special wax seal for optimal preservation and evolution. Limited production of 18,000 bottles (75 cl). It rested for a minimum of 44 months in the bottle prior to its commercial release.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Light brownish-ruby color with medium depth; somewhat turbid with a slight sediment at the base of the bottle. Featuring orange reflections and a wide, tawny/brick-colored rim. (Note: Wet, inelastic cork, presumably never replaced since bottling).

Nose: Perfumed, elegant, and expressive, showing good intensity from the moment of opening. It possesses a beautiful reductive character that reveals noble woods, cedar, aromatic coffee, and a potpourri of smoked peppers. The autumnal background is spectacular: damp earth, leaf litter, morels, truffle, and chestnut husks. As it rounds out, notes of wilted flowers, English orange marmalade, red fruits, and cocoa powder emerge, alongside an almost imperceptible mineral hint of gunpowder, flint, and peat.

Palate: Ample and profound on the palate, featuring a core of spicy, reduced red fruit and a sharp acidity that elevates the entire profile. Savory, with bitter and balsamic touches (mint, stems) and highly elegant, almost creamy toasted nuances. The retronasal is confit-like and earthy—true to its forest soul.

Commentary
The 1973 Gran Reserva captures the true spirit of a legendary vintage. It masterfully combines fragility, balance, roundness, and power, continuously gaining solidity and detail as it breathes. While it remains a benchmark of excellence that will hold for many years, it sits just a step below the monumental 1968 harvest. A breathtaking Bosconia that currently offers everything a lover of traditional Rioja could desire.
