Winemaking
The wine remained for 12 months in large, old wooden vats to complete fermentation and stabilize before racking. It matured in used 225-liter American oak barrels for between 6 and 7 years. Manual rackings were performed every 6 months to avoid the need for filtration. Traditional fining with fresh egg whites prior to bottling in 72 cl containers. It underwent a minimum of 4 years of bottle aging before its commercial release.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Coppery-ruby color with medium depth; slightly turbid with a very fine sediment at the base of the bottle. Wide, tawny/brick-colored rim. Thick, persistent tears.

Nose: Upon opening, it appears shy but without off-odors or excessive reduction. Vegetal hints of licorice, charcoal, and ivy emerge, alongside a spicy backdrop of pepper and laurel. Lacking great flourishes, it gains creaminess over time, revealing nuances of old oak and wine-soaked staves. While it never fully outlines itself, it possesses the undeniable charm of classic Pomal.

Palate: The palate is where the wine finds its best expression. Mature and unctuous, with a profound expression of traditional Riojan aging. Within minutes, it acquires more nuances and, above all, gains in finesse. A piercing trail of acidity and a core of spicy red fruit allow the wine to flow seamlessly. Featuring fine bitter notes and a notable, persistent finish.

Commentary
The 1969 Reserva is a rare specimen from a vintage where very little is usually expected. This bottling was produced primarily for export commitments and saw little release in Spain. While one cannot draw broad conclusions from such a scarce vintage, this Pomal proves its worth through its structural integrity and its ability to blossom on the palate. A curious and rewarding survivor of its era.
