Winemaking
Grapes sourced from estate vineyards (40%) and trusted smallholders in Rioja Alta. Each variety was vinified separately. Alcoholic fermentation took place in 18,000-liter wooden vats; during racking, dried grape stalks were used as a natural filter. The wine remained for 12 months in vats and horizontal tanks for malolactic fermentation and stabilization. It matured for 36 to 48 months in 600 used 225-liter American oak barrels (averaging 12 years of age), mostly crafted in the winery's own cooperage. Total production of 178,605 bottles. It underwent a minimum of 24 months of bottle aging prior to its commercial release.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Coppery-ruby color with medium-low depth; very clear. Brilliant, with amber and reddish reflections. Wide rim, showing no visible distinction from the meniscus.

Nose: Medium intensity. Initially, a creamy note predominates, supporting citrus peel, candied red fruits, quince, and English orange marmalade. It gains reductive complexity with aeration: fine leatherware, lacquer, tung oil, horsehair, and stable-like nuances. Clean, highly classical, and impeccable, though somewhat distant and hesitant. It lacks a certain definitive character, yet maintains a consistent level throughout.

Palate: Friendly and earthy on the palate, with a touch of citric acidity and fine bitter notes that provide significant freshness to the overall profile. Lighter than expected, featuring sweet tannins and a creamy oak trail that brings spices and length. It lacks a bit of "punch" to be fully rounded.

Commentary
The 1981 Prado Enea is a flawless Gran Reserva, technically well-made but lacking the exuberant virtue of the winery's most legendary years. It is a subtle and restrained red that prioritizes traditional Riojan elegance and tertiary cleanliness over structural power. While reliable and enjoyable, it remains a step behind the more ambitious vintages of the house, offering a discreet and scholarly experience.
