Following alcoholic fermentation, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation in large wooden vats, where it remained for 5 years. Subsequently, it matured for 10 years in 225-liter oak barrels. The remainder of its maturation took place in the bottle prior to its commercial release. Production was limited to 63,000 standard bottles (75 cl) and 2,000 magnums. (Note: This unit was in pristine condition, showing a high fill level and an exceptional cork).

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Garnet-cherry color with medium-high depth; highly extracted and opaque. It is extraordinarily clean, defying its age with a youthful vitality. Featuring brilliant garnet and orange reflections. Marked coppery rim, well-defined against the meniscus.

Nose: An imposing wine: serious, clean, and stout. It displays enormous purity, devoid of excessive reduction or artifice, as was characteristic of the great Vega Sicilias of the past. It leads with high-intensity aromas of overwhelming solidity and depth. Complex, it features a very fine mineral vein and earthy nuances that fill the bouquet, accompanied by black fruits—blackberry, blackcurrant—and an ethereal balsamic thread of ivy and laurel leaves.

Palate: Impeccably balanced. It is silky and profoundly polished, yet remains concentrated and enveloping. It carries the finest black fruit supported by a toasted character that provides a solid backbone. Brimming with life and acidity, its freshness is remarkable for a wine with over five decades of life.

Commentary:
The 1960 Único Magnum represents the pinnacle of Vega Sicilia's golden era. Along with the 1962 vintage, it forms an unsurpassable duo of legendary quality. While perhaps slightly more austere and less succulent than its 1962 sibling, it possesses a level of class and structural integrity that few wines can ever hope to achieve. A nearly eternal red that highlights the magnum format as the ultimate vessel for timeless aging.
