Marqués de Arienzo 1982 Gran Reserva

Wine: Marqués de Arienzo 1982 Gran Reserva
Winery: Bodegas Domecq (Elciego, Álava)
Appellation / Zone: D.O.Ca. Rioja
Varietals: 100% Tempranillo.
ABV: 13% vol.
Winemaking:
The wine remained in tanks for 12 months for fermentation and stabilization before being racked for wood aging. It matured for 24 to 30 months in 225-liter French oak barrels, undergoing two manual rackings per year during the first two years. It was bottled in mid-1987 and rested for a minimum of 48 months in the winery’s subterranean cellars prior to its commercial release. (Note: The exceptional quality and elasticity of the cork have been decisive in the wine's pristine preservation).

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Reddish-ruby color with medium depth; clean and without sediment. Featuring brilliant reddish and orange reflections. Broad brick-orange rim.

Nose: An exceptionally smooth and subtle red. It leads with a delicate whisper of withered flowers that quickly gives way to a growing foundation of leather, spices, and mineral nuances of gunpowder and mortar, complemented by smoky hints. Highly elegant, it displays a balance and finesse that surpass the heavier, more monotonous 1981 vintage. All elements are perfectly synchronized in the classic Rioja style; it remains steady and unshakeable throughout two hours of aeration—firm, solid, and poised.

Palate: Clear and fresh, appearing light but offering a caressing texture. It is vital without being overly energetic, capturing the best of the 1982 vintage’s character. Impeccably balanced and integrated, it delivers a generous dose of ripe fruit supported by refined bitter notes that linger on the finish. Savory and long.

Commentary:
The 1982 Marqués de Arienzo Gran Reserva is currently in its prime. It is a wine that historically offered exceptional value and continues to do so through its remarkable structural integrity and charm. A "safe bet" for any enthusiast of Alavesa’s Tempranillo, this bottle proves that the transition to French oak in the early 80s, when handled with this level of care, could yield results of immense sophistication.
