Rioja Ederra 1947 Blanco

Wine: Rioja Ederra 1947 Blanco
Winery: Bodegas Bilbaínas (Haro, La Rioja)
Appellation / Zone: D.O.Ca. Rioja
Varietals: 100% Viura.
ABV: (Not specified)
Winemaking:
Grapes sourced entirely from the historic Finca Zaco estate. The wine spent an initial 12 to 18 months in large foundational wooden vats to complete fermentation and stabilize. It then underwent an aging period of 4 to 5 years in neutral 225-liter American oak barrels and foudres of various capacities, with several manual rackings performed annually. The wine was filtered before bottling and rested for at least 24 months in the winery’s subterranean cellars prior to its commercial release.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Spectacular pale yellow color, falling short of golden. It is remarkably clear and luminous, defying its nearly seven decades of life with a youthful, brilliant aspect and no sediment. It shows no signs of oxidation, appearing as though time has stood still.

Nose: Frank, expansive, and entirely free of rancio or old wood nuances. It opens with aromas of great fruit maturity—dried apricots and quince—complemented by a citric edge of preserved lemon and grapefruit zest. A subtle mentholated background emerges with hints of anise and fennel seeds. Composed and mature, it reveals layers of fruit preserves, nectar, and rosemary honey, wrapped in a fine earthy note. The oak remains in the background, contributing a touch of vanilla, white pepper, and a refined creaminess. Radiant and high-toned, it still possesses the potential to develop further Tertiary complexity.

Palate: It displays as much poise as it does "nerve," with the perfect balance of tension and harmony. Concentrated and orderly, it offers a multifaceted profile: spicy, saline, citric, and slightly off-dry (abocado). The acidity is masterfully integrated, providing a sensation of absolute plenitude. The finish leaves a distinct "umami" impression as it fades gracefully.

Commentary:
The 1947 Ederra Blanco is an extraordinary testament to the longevity of Viura from the Zaco terroir. It is a wine that possesses an almost immortal vitality, maintaining a freshness and precision that are simply breathtaking for its age. A legendary white that sits at the pinnacle of Rioja’s winemaking history, offering a sensory experience of pure plenitude.
