Winemaking:
Grapes sourced from estate vineyards (40%) and various smallholders in Rioja Alta (60%), primarily around the municipality of Fuenmayor. Fermentation took place in concrete tanks and large-capacity wooden vats for a minimum of 12 months. The wine was then racked into neutral American oak barrels, where it aged for 24 to 30 months, with two manual rackings performed annually. A minimum of 24 months of bottle aging in the winery’s cellars was required prior to its commercial release.

Tasting Notes
Appearance:
Very clear reddish-ruby color; translucent, vibrant, and luminous.
Exceptionally clean, with no sediment. Features garnet and orange
reflections. Broad coppery rim.
Nose:
Open, mature, and composed. It leads with a generous amount of red
fruit in liqueur and hints of sloe gin, alongside candied fruit and
orange zest. As it sits, a backdrop of freshly ground spices emerges,
accompanied by a layer of dried leaves, sage, ivy, laurel, and cloves.
It deviates conceptually from the ultra-classic Marqués del Puerto
wines that the winery would produce in subsequent years. The oak is
well-integrated, contributing an attractive whisper of vanilla. Simple
yet highly effective and impressive.
Palate:
Fresh and light on the palate, lacking significant weight but
maintaining an initial "grip" and sufficient acidity to hold its own. It
is an inviting and joyful wine, brimming with reduced fruit notes. It
evokes the style of classic claretes from La Rioja Alta or a Bordón 1970. Very rewarding in its category.
Commentary:
The 1975 Viña Tesos is a charming, unpretentious red that prioritizes freshness and drinkability over structural density. It captures the nimble and vibrant side of Fuenmayor’s traditional winemaking before the stylistic shifts of the following decade. A very pleasant discovery for those who enjoy the agile, fruit-driven profile of aged Riojas.
