Winemaking:
A meticulous selection of grapes from various estate-owned plots in Rioja Alta and local growers. The wine spent 12 to 18 months in large foundational-era wooden vats to complete fermentation and stabilize before racking. It was primarily aged in neutral 225-liter American oak barrels (and other formats) for a period ranging between 54 and 72 months, undergoing periodic manual rackings. Finally, it rested for a minimum of 3 years in the bottle before its commercial release.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Beautiful medium-depth ruby-brownish color; clean, with virtually no sediment. Features vibrant reddish and coppery reflections with notable brilliance. It conveys a strong sense of viscosity, showing thick, persistent legs. Broad orange rim, sharply defined against the meniscus.

Nose: A textbook Paternina that exemplifies the winery’s historical virtues: mature, complex, and suave, with a persistent smoky nuance hovering over the bouquet. It is replete with nuanced details, featuring creamy, fine oak of exceptional elegance. A background of high-quality leather emerges, intertwined with mineral hints of gunpowder and flint. From the first pour, it appears fully expressive and expansive, requiring no aeration to achieve maximum intensity. A remarkably resilient and impressive wine.

Palate: The character of the legendary 1964 vintage takes center stage over the house style, offering vigor, breadth, and a vibrant acidity. It possesses an unusual structure for a wine typically known for its finesse. Expansive and savory, it is generous in reduced fruit, supported by melted, silky tannins. The finish is spicy, exquisitely refined, and persistent, enveloping the palate with immense grace. It gains momentum in the glass, shining with extraordinary persistence.

Commentary:
This is an extraordinary Rioja that captures the pinnacle of a historic harvest. It strikes a perfect balance between the traditional silkiness of Paternina and the raw power of the '64 vintage. A wine of great integrity and depth that remains radiant decades after its birth—a true benchmark for collectors.
