Beronia 1986 Reserva

Wine: Beronia 1986 Reserva
Winery: Bodegas Beronia (Ollauri, La Rioja)
Appellation / Zone: D.O.Ca. Rioja
Varietals: 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, 10% other local varieties.
ABV: 13% vol.
Winemaking:
The grapes are sourced from clay-limestone vineyards situated around Ollauri in Rioja Alta. The wine underwent fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, where it remained for up to 12 months. It was then transferred to semi-neutral 225-liter American oak barrels for a 24-month aging period, undergoing two manual rackings per year. Finally, it rested for a minimum of 36 months in the winery’s subterranean cellars (calados) prior to its commercial release.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Reddish-ruby color with medium depth; impeccably clean, translucent, and slightly evolved. Features brilliant, gleaming amber and garnet reflections. Broad brick-orange rim, showing a marked contrast against the meniscus.

Nose: Low initial intensity but well-defined and clean. It presents a mature, fruity profile (ripe cherries, morello cherries, strawberry tree fruit), appearing lean and remarkably stripped of oak or toasted nuances, save for a faint whisper of vanilla that dissipates with aeration. While there is little evidence of its long aging, a growing balsamic character emerges, gradually taking hold of the bouquet alongside aromatic herbs—laurel, fenugreek, and fennel—and subtle spicy notes in the background. Smooth and inviting.

Palate: Slender and fragile in appearance, yet fresh and balanced despite its moderate concentration. Far from being brittle, this Beronia proves to be rounded and fully integrated, surprising with a persistent core of acidity that seamlessly stitches the whole together. It is, quite simply, an effortless and pleasant wine that invites another glass.

Commentary:
A wine that meets expectations by prioritizing drinkability over complexity. It sits in a graceful state of maturity, proving that a wine does not need to be monumental to be thoroughly enjoyable. Its freshness and integrated acidity make it a delightful discovery for those seeking a classic, approachable Rioja with years of poise.
