Vega Sicilia Único 1959

Wine: Vega Sicilia Único 1959
Winery: Bodega Vega Sicilia (Valbuena de Duero, Valladolid)
Appellation / Zone: D.O. Ribera del Duero
Varietals: 70% Tinto Fino, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Malbec and Merlot
ABV: 13.5% vol.
Winemaking:
Grapes sourced exclusively from estate vineyards. Following alcoholic fermentation, the wine was racked into large wooden vats (18,000–20,000 liters) to undergo malolactic fermentation and natural stabilization for a minimum of five years. It then matured for 10 years in seasoned 225-liter oak barrels. The remainder of its aging was completed in the bottle until release. Limited production of 30,800 bottles (75 cl) and 2,000 magnums.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Exceptional preservation; the original cork (non-recorked) remained elastic and intact. Reddish-ruby color of medium depth; extraordinarily limpid despite minor sediment at the base. Radiant garnet and orange reflections. Broad coppery rim, sharply defined against the meniscus.

Nose: A dreamlike nose—ethereal, crystalline, and possessing a finesse rarely achieved. It harmonizes the aromatic intensity of the 1951-53 vintages with the profound depth of the 1957. It borders on perfection. Lean and pure, it offers a perfume of dried petals and candied fruit, delicately smoked by a breathtaking mineral streak, reminiscent of the 1955 but even more pronounced. It is a "Frankenstein" of excellence, assembling the finest attributes of each 1950s vintage. The background is apotheosic, filled with earthy notes, wetlands, and ivy. A wine in capital letters.

Palate: Upon contact, it becomes eternal, coating the palate with maximum elegance, clarity, and equilibrium. It is the potion of ultimate taste, where every element has fused into a singular, new entity. It has undeniably reached its zenith; expecting further development would be unwise. Only a magnum format could potentially elevate this experience.

Commentary:
A wine of stratospheric dimensions that culminates a marvelous decade for Vega Sicilia. It is difficult to evaluate such a legendary run (51-53-55-57-58-59) impartially; they are unclassifiable icons, far removed from the "black and white" Spain of their era. This 1959 is a masterpiece that stands alone.
