Viña del Olivo 2001

Wine: Viña del Olivo 2001
Winery: Viñedos del Contino (Laserna-Laguardia, Álava)
Appellation / Zone: D.O.Ca. Rioja
Varietals: 90% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano
ABV: 13% vol.
Winemaking:
Crafted exclusively with estate grapes. Manual selection of the best Tempranillo clusters from the "Olivo" plot and Graciano from "Pago de San Gregorio Grande." Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, then the wine is racked into new French oak barrels to complete malolactic fermentation. It is transferred again to 225-liter barrels (70% new French oak, 20% American, and 10% Hungarian) where it matures for 20 months. Limited production of 27,833 bottles. Minimum of 12 months of bottle aging before release.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Garnet-cherry color with high depth; opaque and dark. Brilliant with reddish and orange reflections. Clean, although with a large amount of sediment at the bottom. Tinted, permanent tears with a significant sense of thickness. Broad coppery rim, sharply defined against the meniscus.

Nose: Dominated by an impactful varietal expression and great fruity elegance that maintains the fragrance, delicacy, and freshness of its early years. Pure Tempranillo, stripped of artifice, dressed in silk and veined with careful earthy and mineral traces. Tons of ripe, juicy, and fragrant black and red fruit hide the fine wood notes that projected more intensely in other vintages. A wine that has taken the best possible path and is polishing itself like a champion.

Palate: A wine worthy of study. It summarizes both the ancient and modern sides of Rioja: poise, balance, lightness, and freshness combined with structure, maturity, length, firmness, and tension. It is neither heavy nor excessive, avoiding over-extraction or harsh tannins. The best "Olivo" ever tasted.

Commentary:
The best is yet to come for this wine. It will be interesting to see if it achieves the legendary longevity of CVNE's classics. A case of this was purchased exactly 10 years ago today (minus one day) and kept for a special occasion. Great work by Chus Madrazo; a truly magnificent job.
