Winemaking
Grapes sourced predominantly (75%) from estate vineyards, with the remainder from smallholders in Rioja Alavesa. A portion of the fruit underwent destemming and a partial carbonic maceration for 12 to 15 days. The wine spent 30 to 36 months in large oak vats for malolactic fermentation and stabilization prior to racking. Aged for 24 months in seasoned 225-liter American oak barriques (average age of 12 years), with 3 to 4 manual rackings (trasiegos) per year. Unfined and lightly filtered before bottling (70 cl format). Aged for a minimum of 48 months in the bottle cellar. This was a special edition for the Club de Cosecheros Solar de Samaniego, released for Christmas 1985.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Luminous reddish-ruby of medium depth; clear and brilliant. It displays orange and copper glints with a mature, tile-red rim.

Nose: High initial intensity that gains precision with aeration. Clean and poised, it offers a classic and highly representative house style. The bouquet is defined by vanilla, sweet spices, aged leather, and wet oak staves. As an excellent example of traditional Rioja, the tertiary character evolves towards notes of saddle leather, faisandage, and wet earth, underpinned by a liqueur-like hint of cherries.

Palate: The palate showcases the characteristic drive and "grip" of the finest 1975s. Fresh and nervous, it is driven by a vibrant acidity and a distinct earthy backbone. It maintains an impeccable balance between oxidative aging and ripe fruit. The tannins are fully resolved, polished, and round. Currently the most impressive Solar de Samaniego expression in recent tastings; the Club de Cosecheros releases consistently prove more vital and age-worthy than the winery’s standard Gran Reservas.
