The Tempranillo is sourced from the estate's oldest vineyards in Rioja Alta, primarily within the municipalities of Briñas, Labastida, and Villalba. The remaining grapes originate from the Melchorón I and II estates in Briones and Rodezno.
 Winemaking
Fermentation was conducted in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 30°C. The wine spent 8 months in old oak vats to complete malolactic fermentation. In July 1990, it was racked into 225-liter American oak barriques, where it underwent an extensive élevage of 84 months, including a total of 14 traditional manual rackings. Bottled directly from the barrel, unfiltered, in July 1997.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Luminous reddish-ruby of medium-high depth; clean and brilliant with high-intensity golden and amber glints. It features a broad, copper-toned rim with a marked transition to the meniscus.

Nose: Displays extraordinary power and aromatic complexity. A quintessential classic that showcases the finest virtues of traditional Rioja. The bouquet reveals a profound perfume of red fruit and dried petals, followed by a sequence of cocoa, aromatic coffee, macerated plums, and sweet spices. Nuances of orange peel, cherries in liqueur, and herbal infusions add further layers. A level of depth and elegance rarely encountered. It borders on perfection.

Palate: A surge of freshness and acidity. It is wild, concentrated, and pungent, overflowing with ripe red fruit and citric accents. Earthy and marked by a distinct mineral character, the palate is explosive, saturating the senses with its energy and vigor. It possesses an immense structural backbone that will require many more years of bottle age to fully tame. The tannins are firm, dry, and prominent, complemented by elegant bitter notes. This wine epitomizes the pinnacle of La Rioja Alta’s traditional style, rivaling the greatest historical vintages. It shows no signs of reduction and possesses a staggering potential for further growth.
