Winemaking
The wine remained for 12 months in large wooden vats to complete malolactic fermentation and settle before racking. It matured for 30 months in used American oak barrels of 225 liters of varying ages. It underwent between 16 and 20 months of bottle aging in the winery’s cellars prior to its commercial release. Historically, this same wine was marketed as Gran Reserva, Reserva, or Crianza depending on the vintage and the timing of its release.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Reddish-ruby color with medium body; clear, remarkably clean, and brilliant, without any trace of sediment. It displays vivid orange reflections and a wide, tawny/brick-colored rim, leaving very fine, persistent tears.

Nose: Initially presents low intensity; soft and creamy, with hints of sweet spices (cinnamon, nutmeg) and an almost imperceptible touch of cocoa butter that steadily gains prominence. A well-ordered red without excesses, increasingly marked by its time in the barrel in a style that could be termed "modern." It benefits from aeration, opening up to reveal a varietal background of wilted flowers and black pepper.

Palate: Very fresh and soft on the palate; slightly acidulous and less dense than expected, featuring an almost minty note that joins the reduced red fruit. It is very easy to drink—correct at all times, without showing signs of collapse.

Commentary
The 1981 Monte Rojo stands as one of the best examples of this label from the early 1980s. While it leans towards a more approachable and "modern" profile for its era, it maintains the freshness and balance necessary to hold its own after four decades. It is a reliable, well-crafted Rioja that prioritizes drinkability and clean oak integration over structural power.
