Winemaking:
Grapes sourced exclusively from estate vineyards. The wine spent 12 months in the traditional wooden fermenters (cocederas) for alcoholic fermentation and initial settling. It was then transferred to large neutral wooden vats for malolactic fermentation and stabilization over a period of 2 years. Maturation continued in neutral oak barrels for an additional 6 years. The remainder of its aging took place in the bottle until its commercial release throughout 1998. Production was limited to 63,500 standard bottles (75 cl) and 2,000 magnums.
 
Tasting Notes
 
Appearance: Garnet-ruby color with medium-high depth; opaque. Featuring reddish reflections with a somewhat muted brilliance. Broad orange rim, showing a marked contrast against the meniscus.
 
Nose: A Único that rightfully belongs among the estate's most elegant expressions. Though light in appearance, it is remarkably solid and composed. It opens with a stunning bed of tertiary notes—reminiscent of a dormant autumn—possessing a poetic lightness and finesse. Nuances of animal hair, leather harnesses, and smoky embers emerge alongside damp leaf litter. It features a profound background of antique "Isabeline" woods, cedar, and chestnut, intertwined with oils and linseed. More than a wine, it is an intricate piece of filigree.
 
Palate: Broad, robust, and full-bodied. More vital than energetic, it is enveloped in a vibrant acidity where layers of ripe black fruits and spices entwine. The texture is sensational—velvety and plush, like a comfortable armchair—settling on the palate with extraordinary persistence. "Jean Cocteau made wine."
 
Commentary:
The 1974 Único is arguably the finest Spanish wine of its vintage. Vega Sicilia’s singular ability to extract greatness from theoretically adverse harvests—as seen here and in other difficult years like 1965 or 1967—is a testament to the unique "quadrature" of the Valbuena terroir. This Magnum is a masterclass in consistency and poise, offering a level of refinement that few can match.
