Tasting Notes
Appearance:
Garnet-ruby color with medium-high depth; opaque and somewhat matte.
Definitely darker than the 1999, 2000, or even the 2004 "75 Centenario"
vintages. Reddish and brownish reflections with a marked sense of
viscosity and persistent, "eternal" tearing.
Nose:
Abundant, generous, and expressive, showing a lack of restraint. It
replaces the house's habitual sobriety with an excess of very ripe red
fruit and compotes (redcurrant, bursting cherries, Smyrna figs),
finished with a broad vanillic stroke that blurs this large-format work.
A balsamic background emerges, reminiscent of maceration (skins and
stems). Solid and beautiful, though currently lethargic in its
expression of classic aging.
Palate:
It retains a potent core of tart freshness that heralds the layers
behind: tonnes of candied fruit, old leather, and an exquisite creamy
toastiness. Dense, full-bodied, and direct; surging with energy,
vitality, and health. It has yet to begin its reduction phase in the
bottle; the years have made no visible dent in its structure. To be
drunk with passion.
Commentary:
A Faustino with greater weight than usual—robust, healthy, and "fleshy"—walking nonchalantly along the stylistic path established by Don Julio Faustino Martínez. While it occasionally strays from the usual finesse, its pedigree and immense future are undeniable. This 2001 vintage confirms its distinct personality; this "Nº 1" already ranks among the winery's finest, with enough raw material to shed its current "fat" and find prime form over the coming years. An essential wine at an unbeatable price.
