Winemaking:
Manual harvest in 12 kg crates. First selection in the vineyard of the "shoulders" of the clusters from vines with a minimum age of 60 years, located between Laguardia and San Vicente de la Sonsierra. Upon arrival at the winery, a sorting table is used to remove overripe grapes. Fermentation in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. Racked into new 225-liter oak barrels (80% French, 20% American). Subjected to various periodic manual rackings. Limited production of 3,500 bottles.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Garnet-cherry color with high depth; highly extracted and opaque. Clean, with significant sediment at the base. Scant reflections, barely reddish and coppery; low gloss, matte. Minimal rim, slightly orange, sharply contrasted against the meniscus. Viscous sensation with dense, permanent tears.

Nose: Immediately striking, showing there is a great deal of wine here. High concentration and intensity: initial minerality, some graphite, and damp earth. Lean, pure, and without gimmicks. It displays a marked varietal character: fresh, perfumed with juicy red fruit and a delicate background of petals. With aeration, it acquires a medicinal, herbal, and balsamic air without losing its initial mineral streak. Very fine, elegant oak with a hint of sandalwood. Beautiful!

Palate: Poise and nerve, with strong acidity and still-marked tannins. The impression of youth is profound. Dry, spicy, and concentrated, with bitter notes and a barely visible touch of sweet spices that structures the whole. Excellent barrel work that does not mask the fruit. Slender, well-proportioned, long, distinguished, and very classy.

Commentary:
A Gran Reserva that moves along paths very different from traditional Riojan styles or over-extracted modern reds. This "goldsmith" Ganuza has become a difficult piece to hunt down. In terms of quality and aging potential, it has nothing to envy of its 2004 sibling (the 100-point Parker wine). In fact, this 2001 is much, much better.
