Following fermentation and the winter period, the wine is placed in large wooden vats for one year. It is then racked into new 225-liter oak barrels for 8 months of aging. Subsequently, it matures for 24 months in semi-new barrels, followed by 3 years in used barrels. The lengthy aging process concludes with a final 3-year stay in large, seasoned wooden vats. Limited production of 42,100 Bordeaux bottles (released between 1994 and 1995) and 2,000 magnums (released during 1999).

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Garnet-ruby color with medium-high depth; extracted, hermetic, and clean, with virtually no sediment. Brilliant reddish and amber reflections. The rim is minimal and slender, showing a classically evolved tile-colored tone that contrasts sharply with the meniscus.

Nose: A Vega Sicilia that stands as a testament to the winery's legendary consistency; a clear example that there are no "bad" vintages here. Nevertheless, this 1983 is singular and distinct, possessing a concentration that bears little resemblance to other Único releases of its decade. It opens with disconcerting notes of grape syrup (arrope), caramelized sugar, and toffee, which gradually yield to fruit compote, quince, and fortified wine nuances. The fine oak is perceived discreetly behind the scenes—as subtle as it is elegant. It gains intensity with aeration, revealing high-quality roasted coffee and smoky notes, alongside a series of pure earthy tones, cigar ash, tobacco filler, leather, and noble woods.

Palate: The palate confirms its absolute integration. It maintains equilibrium effortlessly—silky, enveloping, and creamy, but above all, profoundly elegant. It features those characteristic "plush" tannins that make Vega Sicilia immediately recognizable. Accessible and currently at an excellent peak for consumption, it is unlikely to develop further complexity in the future.

Commentary:
An intriguing Único that balances a warmer, almost confectionery aromatic profile with the house's signature structural elegance. While some might argue the extensive aging borders on excessive, the wine’s current harmony and silkiness are undeniable. A remarkable survivor from a challenging vintage.
