Faustino V 1982 Reserva

Wine: Faustino V 1982 Reserva
Winery: Bodegas Faustino Martínez (Oyón, Rioja Alavesa)
Appellation / Zone: D.O.Ca. Rioja
Varietals: 80% Tempranillo, 20% Graciano
ABV: 12.5%
Winemaking:
50% of the grapes were sourced from estate vineyards, with the remainder purchased from local growers in Rioja Alavesa. The wine rested for 14 months in large tanks to complete fermentation and stabilization before being racked for oak aging. It matured for 14 to 16 months in used 225-liter oak barrels (90% American, 10% French and Yugoslavian). A minimum of 24 months of bottle aging in the winery’s cellars was required before its commercial release.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Ruby-red with medium-low depth; very clear, translucent, and free of sediment. Brilliant and luminous, with abundant orange and copper reflections. Notable sense of viscosity; highly glyceric with persistent legs. Broad, tawny rim.

Nose: Frank, direct, and expressive. It is packed with tertiary notes of marked intensity, recognizable from the start. It carries the signature traditional house style, though it appears somewhat riper and less refined than the Faustino I Gran Reserva from the same vintage. Hints of red fruit in liqueur and spices are joined by aromatic herbs (lavender, oregano) and a toasted backdrop of seasoned wood with a touch of vanilla.

Palate: Smooth, round, and fully integrated—exceptionally pleasant to drink. It retains a very correct acidity that refreshes the ensemble. For those who enjoy the most classic style of Rioja, this is one of the best wines in terms of value for money. Its origin is unmistakable, and with some experience, both the winery and the vintage are easily identifiable.

Commentary:
A very well-resolved Reserva from a legendary vintage. While it lacks the ultimate sophistication of its "big brother" (Faustino I), it offers a consistent and highly enjoyable drinking experience. It represents a fantastic opportunity to enjoy a 1982 Rioja that remains vibrant and balanced.
