Paternina 1959 Reserva Especial

Wine: Paternina 1959 Reserva Especial
Winery: Bodegas Federico Paternina (Ollauri, Rioja Alta)
Appellation / Zone: D.O.Ca. Rioja
Varietals: 70% Tempranillo, 25% Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano, 5% Viura
ABV: N/A
Winemaking:
A selection of grapes from various plots in Rioja Alta near Ollauri and small local growers. The wine spent 18 to 24 months in large, founding-era oak vats to complete fermentation and stabilization before racking. It was then aged in used 225-liter American oak barrels (and other capacities) for 54 to 60 months. The wine underwent periodic manual barrel-to-barrel rackings until it was bottled in early 1967. Finally, it rested for a minimum of three years in the historic underground cellars of Ollauri before release.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Ruby-red with medium-high depth; opaque and remarkably clean, with very fine sediment at the base. It does not show its age. Refulgent and brilliant, with vibrant orange and reddish iridescence. Broad, amber rim, sharply defined against the meniscus.

Nose: High intensity, perfumed, and of great depth. It exudes elegant notes of withered petals joined by Russian leather, black truffle, and a very fine tarry touch in the background that underpins mineral registers (graphite, slate). Everything is in perfect order, structured by a complete integration of the oak. Clean, orderly, and complex at the highest level. It maintains these registers while keeping tertiary characters at bay.

Palate: It maintains the house signature: roundness, smoothness, and that characteristic sweet nuance nestled upon luxurious, cushioned tannins. A sensation of immense quality that increases glass after glass, gaining stature with every moment. Vibrant acidity and a formidable structure. It is brimming with energy, reminiscent of the magnificent Conde de los Andes from the same vintage.

Commentary:
The reds of 1959 are among the greatest ever produced in Rioja, and this Paternina confirms that reputation. Everything indicates that it will maintain this superb state for a very long time. An absolute luxury of a wine.
