Viña Turzaballa 1994 Gran Reserva

Wine: Viña Turzaballa 1994 Gran Reserva
Winery: Bodegas Ramón Bilbao (Haro, Rioja Alta)
Appellation / Zone: D.O.Ca. Rioja
Varietals: 100% Tempranillo
ABV: 13.5%
Winemaking:
Manual harvest in mid-October from the estate's two oldest vineyards (over 75 years old) near Haro: Finca de la Turca and La Zaballa, owned by the family since the winery's foundation. The wine completed malolactic fermentation and stabilization in tanks before being racked. It matured for 40 months in American oak barrels (225L), with two manual rackings performed each year. Limited production of 218,415 bottles. It underwent a minimum of 40 months of bottle aging in the winery’s cellars before release.

Tasting Notes:

Appearance: Garnet-ruby with medium-high depth; dark and opaque. Limpid and brilliant, showing no signs of sediment. Orange and copper reflections. Medium-width, saffron-toned (azafranado) rim.

Nose: It builds in intensity with aeration. Initially accessible and open, it reveals a trail of very ripe fruit (orange marmalade, currants, plums, dried apricots) and an off-dry hint of red liquorice, accompanied by sweet spices, vanilla, and nutmeg. Fortunately, it sheds this initial clutter to reveal a core of fresh, floral Tempranillo, accented by spicy notes and oak-driven toast.

Palate: It remains somewhat firm and in need of further bottle aging. Concentrated and slightly woody, it is driven by intense acidity and marked tannins. While the high-quality raw material is evident, the ensemble suffers from excessive youth—much like the 1999 vintage. Broad, full, fresh, and tart.

Commentary:
A promising wine from Ramón Bilbao that should improve significantly with more time in the cellar. It is one of the most interesting labels from the estate, sitting well above their current Gran Reserva. One can only hope that a wine of this caliber is eventually produced again.
