Prado Enea 2001 Gran Reserva

Wine: Prado Enea 2001 Gran Reserva
Winery: Bodegas Muga (Haro, Rioja Alta)
Appellation / Zone: D.O.Ca. Rioja
Varietals: 80% Tempranillo, 16% Garnacha, 2% Mazuelo, 2% Graciano
ABV: 13.5%
Winemaking:
Grapes are sourced from estate-owned vineyards and small growers in Rioja Alta. These plots are typically the last to be harvested to ensure optimal ripeness. Each varietal is vinified separately in 10,000-liter oak vats using indigenous yeasts and no temperature control. The wine is then stabilized for 12 months in large 16,000-liter vats. It was aged for 36 months in 225-liter American oak barrels, mostly crafted in-house. Traditionally fined with fresh egg whites before bottling. Aged for a minimum of 36 months in the winery’s underground cellars before release.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Garnet-cherry with medium-high depth; opaque and well-extracted. Clean and brilliant with reddish and orange reflections. Narrow, tawny (atejado) rim, sharply defined against the meniscus. High sense of viscosity, showing thick, tinted, and persistent legs.

Nose: Powerful and expressive, though somewhat rugged in its early stages. It is currently dominated by oak influence: smoke, crushed peppercorns, toasted notes, and various hints of charcoal, peat, balsamics, black liquorice, and damp earth. Remarkably, it shows no signs of reduction despite years in the bottle. Ripe red fruits and candied, liqueur-like notes emerge gradually, though they have yet to fully define themselves. It feels like a "raw" Prado Enea, reminiscent of the 1982 style.

Palate: More resolved on the palate, though driven by a sharp acidity that defines the entire tasting experience. Structured, broad, and vigorous; it still possesses some rough edges, with drying and marked tannins. While its character is evident, it remains in its first youth. A red with a clear future ahead.

Commentary:
This 2001 is a formidable and structural vintage for Prado Enea. It currently prioritizes power over the hallmark elegance of the cuvée, suggesting a long life ahead in the cellar. It is a wine for patient collectors who appreciate the more muscular side of Haro's traditional reds.
