Glorioso 1960 Gran Reserva

Wine: Glorioso 1960 Gran Reserva
Winery: Bodegas Palacio (Laguardia, Rioja Alavesa)
Appellation / Zone: D.O.Ca. Rioja
Varietals: 60% Tempranillo, 30% Garnacha, 10% Mazuelo and Viura
ABV: N/A
Winemaking:
A small portion of the grapes comes from old estate vineyards surrounding the winery, with the remainder sourced from small growers in Rioja Alavesa within a 15-kilometer radius of Laguardia. The wine spent one year in century-old founding-era oak vats for fermentation and stabilization. It then matured for 36 to 42 months in seasoned American oak barrels of various capacities. Subjected to at least two manual barrel-to-barrel rackings per year. Traditionally fined with fresh egg whites and bottled unfiltered directly from the cask. Aged for a minimum of three years in the winery’s historic cellars before release. Relabeled and recorked in February 1982.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Ruby-red with medium depth; very clear, translucent, and completely free of sediment. Displays vibrant orange reflections and a luminous sheen. The rim is broad and tawny (atejado). Note on service: The cork was diminutive and saturated halfway, yet it was removed in two clean pieces despite its fragile, "chocolate-like" texture.

Nose: Traditional in style; initially subtle in intensity but sharp and well-defined. It opens with ripe notes of sweet spices and reduced red fruit (damson plums, candied fruits, dried apricots). This gives way to a long, increasingly reductive sequence of damp earth, chestnut husks, walnut bark, ground pepper, and charcoal. It eventually turns misty and "autumnal," enveloping the senses. Full of charm.

Palate: Light and elegant on the entry, with a tart accent that stands out against its overall roundness. Soft and poised, yet far from being lean or weak. It opens gradually, leaving a very fine imprint of luxurious oak without being overbearing. Savory and deep, showcasing the high quality of the raw material.

Commentary:
Another Gran Reserva from Bodegas Palacio that confirms the estate’s consistency in crafting wines with distinct personality and vintage character. While it does not reach the monumental heights of the 1959—few wines ever will—it holds its own remarkably well.
