Winemaking:
A selection of grapes from various plots in Rioja Alta near Ollauri and small local growers. All varietals are vinified together. The wine rests for 12 to 18 months in large, original founding-era oak vats and concrete tanks to complete fermentation and stabilization. It is then aged in used 225-liter American oak barrels (and other capacities) for 54 to 72 months. The wine underwent periodic manual barrel-to-barrel rackings until it was bottled between mid-1968 and 1970. It was stored for a minimum of 12 months in the historic underground cellars (calados) of Ollauri before its commercial release.

Tasting Notes
Appearance:
Brownish-ruby color with medium depth; open and translucent. Displays
orange and reddish reflections with muted brilliance. The rim is broad
and tawny (atejado), with thick, persistent legs that suggest a strong sense of viscosity.
Nose:
Reductive, poised, and fine, though with an initial touch of rusticity
that defines Paternina’s distinctive character. Subtle notes of seasoned
wine vats, wet fur, and saddlery emerge over a persistent backdrop of
toast, smoke, and minerals (gunpowder, flint). It evolves into a more
accessible and mature profile with hints of dried apricots, macerated
plums, and sweet pastries.
Palate:
The acidity is somewhat lean but measured, showing a discreet and fully
integrated profile without excesses. It is beautifully balanced,
offering a mouthful of spices and fine bitters that complement the
creamy oak. It maintains the signature slightly off-dry (abocado) touch associated with the house.
Commentary:
A Paternina very much in the style of the estate's legendary 1950s releases. Most of this vintage was marketed in Spain without a vintage indication; these rare dated bottlings were primarily exported in small lots to the United States and the United Kingdom. A balanced, historic classic.
