Winemaking:
Grapes sourced from estate vineyards and small producers in Rioja Alta. The wine spent 12 months in large oak vats to complete malolactic fermentation and settle before moving to barrel aging. It matured for 24 to 30 months in 225-liter American oak barrels, subjected to regular periodic rackings. Bottled in 70 cl containers. Aged for a minimum of 5 years in the bottle within the winery's old cellars on Calle de las Cuevas in Haro before commercial release.

Tasting Notes
Appearance:
Beautiful reddish-ruby color with medium-low depth; clear and
translucent. Radiant with orange and coppery reflections. Extremely
clean, showing no signs of sediment. Broad, tile-colored (atejado) rim,
with little differentiation from the rest of the meniscus.
Nose:
Good intensity, initially revealing a significant dose of smoky and
dairy notes accompanied by a light patina of vanilla, creamy woods, and
fine reductive notes: old leather, stable, and walnut bark. Somewhat
voluminous and perhaps overly extroverted, it is full of sweet spices
(nutmeg, cinnamon) and a trail of mature notes including candied fruit,
toffee, English tobacco, molasses, and bitter orange jam. Full of detail
and very flashy. It requires aeration to shed some of its initial
weight, eventually revealing a herbal background of fennel, anise, and
sage, leading to notes of withered flowers and leaf litter.
Palate:
Lighter than expected on the palate without being diluted or lacking
concentration. Fresh and clean, supported by a very successful acidity
that leads to a trace of high-quality sweetness. The ensemble is
well-resolved and effective. It features mature, high-quality tannins.
Commentary:
In some respects, it was even more enjoyable than the Gran Berceo from the same vintage. This wine demonstrates the excellent work of Luis Gurpegui Muga during his early years at Berceo. They were expensive wines at the time, but time has proven them right.
